According to ChatGPT, it is possible to create staircase wiring with three Shelly units; one at each light switch and one at the light source. Also, you don't need any wires between them, just L+0, and the local switch.

Also, Shelly is supposed to handle switching on and off regardless of the state of the switch (open/closed). Is this correct?

If I want to have a double light switch to handle two light sources then?

then i would say the most simple method is to create rules.

something along the lines of

when shelly 1 = on then shelly 2 = on
when shelly 1 = off then shelly 2 = off

this way you can then have other devices / lights turned on when you turn on other devices.

i would also look into the i4 device this is not a relay but more of a input sender. When you press button/switch then turn on XYZ device
