It would be great to get a range of devices that could use Matter over Thread, or is there even the possibility this could be added to the Gen3 devices (seeing as they have a 2.4Ghz radio)?

Thanks!

Shelly Plug S Gen3 does support Matter.

All the others (gen3 and gen3 mini) are told to be converted to Matter when firmware 1.6 released.

After Matter support don't except having all earlier supports, Matter consumes extra resources so you have to decide what's worth of have in.

Not sure if they will implement the Thread protocol in conjunction with Matter or introduce it at all. I guess that's to be seen in the future.

It comes down to the chipset that can or cant support thread and not so much the 2.4Ghz frequency.
would need to look into the chipset of what CPU the shelly is using

The standard Shelly ESP32 is Shelly-C3F8 MCU. The Shelly-C38F are fully compatible with ESP32-C3, but with build-in more Flash and RAM.

C3 has Wifi only, the ESP32 C6 variant supports Thread/Zigbee Radio.

Probably shelly would have to change the ESP32 variant to C6 to offer Thread. In the meantime, with Gen4 there are also Shellys that support Zigbee. No idea which ESP32 variant is used there or Zigbee has been added differently.

So, the company's founder explained the question about Matter and Thread from the last live stream. The Matter protocol will be used over Wi-Fi and not over Thread. Im sure there will be a few questions about why this was done.

my answer would be " Yes "

For now the 4th Gen Devices will support Wifi, Zigbee, Bluetooth ( for integration and communication to other shelly blu devices ) and other devices will have Z-wave.

Matter will then work the IP-based protocol Wifi or Ethernet.

Maybe gen 7 or 8 will have thread but for now I think its good to have an answer about Matter and Thread

I also really would love to see a Thread firmware für Gen4 devices.

Right now, many people use Zigbee instead of Thread. One reason is that currently influencers and enthusiasts recommend so, because there are too less devices on the market that support it. I gave it a try and really struggle with that.

Imagine Shelly would invest the development in this firmware, rendering the Gen4 devices into the game changer for Thread as a whole technology! With that portfolio there are sooo many things that can be done over Thread, each expanding the network range as they don't run on batteries. Turning any standard power outlet into a smart one, any lamp turning into a smart lamp. Just two examples...

Shelly would be THE company selling products for everybody who is willing to build their smart home on a future-proof technology.

Given the problems I’m having with Matter on 1.6 thus far, I’m not so sure I’d want to mess with Thread yet. I haven’t had much luck with a couple Aqara door locks that are Matter over Thread, either. They work great, but it’s unsettling that there’s virtually no control over what’s happening with them, especially as they seem to drop off connectivity to HomeKit pretty frequently.
