Shelly plug melting with 3KW?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have a heating rod in my warn water boiler that is switched from HA when photovoltaic has power left over. The heating rod is 3KW, so max. 14A given 230-240 V we are having here.

The Shelly Plug should support 16A continuous draw? Nevertheless it's the second Shelly that melted. After the first I changes also the power socket to be more robust.

Please see the picture.

What wife switch would you recommend instead? And could I get a refund for it?

Best

David

Two possible issues:

(a) The contact pin of the Shelly got too hot (by whatsoever reason) and melted the power socket, or

(b) contact resistance in the power socket was to high, which heated the contact pin up and melted the Shelly‘s case.

What rated power and current has the power socket, please?

There is some evidence for a contact resistance at the pin, which may be caused by a slacked contact in the socket:

Hi, the socket is rated 16A as well.

A friend mentioned yesterday that perhaps the relais was switching on/off too often?

But that shouldn't actually matter?

Also as it's a resistive load there is no such thing as starting current, right?

I'll survive the loss of that shelly switch!

What could I potentially do to avoid this? Shelly without sockets and direct cable clamp?

Writing in English again, maybe some more people might want to know?

This seems to work just fine. Now waiting for the sun so we get power for "free"!

One question though: As per datasheet the shelly 1 mini gen3 should have a temp sensor built in?

Seems the entity can't be added anywhere though?

Ja, Prozessor Temp

musst ihn aber aktivieren in HA (Screenshot zeigt deaktiviert)
